History

Prior to the formation of Avocados Australia in 2003, the Peak Industry Body for Avocados was the Australian Avocado Growers Federation (AAGF).

Originally set up in the early 1970's, AAGF was a collective of State bodies, who in turn represented growers in their State. This arrangement allowed industry to work together on common issues and address common challenges on a national basis, however, growers had no direct access to or influence on the organisation. In fact, the arrangement kept them at arm's length. Furthermore, the State members of AAGF were ranked according to major and minor status depending on their contribution to the national production levels and activities were governed by prescriptive fee arrangements.

Responding to the concerns of growers, the leadership of AAGF consulted widely with industry to determine the most suitable organisational structure to meet the needs of growers and foster growth and development of industry. As a result, in 2003, Avocados Australia was formed allowing grower-members direct and equal access to their national organisation.
