Bio-Security

Biosecurity is all about protecting livelihoods, lifestyles and the natural environment, which could be harmed by the introduction of new pests. Biosecurity is a national priority, implemented off-shore, at the border and on farm.

Representation

Avocados Australia represents the Australian avocado industry on all national biosecurity matters and is an active member of Plant Health Australia (PHA), the national coordinator of the government-industry partnership for plant biosecurity in Australia. Avocados Australia is also a signatory to the national Emergence Plant Pest Response Deed and acts on behalf of the Australian avocado industry under this deed.

Bio-Security Planning

In 2011 Avocados Australia and PHA released two biosecurity planning documents critical to protecting Australian avocado production against exotic pests: 1) a revised Industry Biosecurity Plan for the Avocado Industry (V2.01), and 2) the first Orchard Biosecurity Manual for the Avocado Industry (V1.0). These documents are located on the Best Practice Resource.

ANVAS

An important part of orchard biosecurity is clean planting material. Avocados Australia is the Avocado Nursery Voluntary Accreditation Scheme’s (ANVAS) Registrar, which aims to ensure access to high quality planting material from accredited nurseries. For details on ANVAS, click here.
