Keeping Kids Healthy over the School Holidays

Daily schedules can place a huge amount of pressure and stress on your child. So how can you keep them fighting fit and healthy for the school holidays?

Well who better to ask than a Mum? So we welcome Anna, a Mum from the Australian Avocados family, who is keen on sharing her tips and tricks for keeping kids healthy. She also has some great ideas about using avocado as an easy way to get those extra vitamins and nutrients into your child's diet.

If you have your own tips of getting your kids to eat their fruit and veggies, we would love for you to share them here also!

Hi Everyone

My name is Anna. I’m a mother of two very active, young boys. They love to keep busy running around and using their imagination.

To keep them healthy, I’m always looking for new ways to get extra goodness into their diets. Avocados are a wonderful fruit containing a lot of vital nutrients that can keep our children healthy. With their creamy texture and subtle taste, I’ve found them to be a real favourite in our house.

When they were babies, they started with mashed banana mixed with avocado and now we include avocados in most meals. Some of the boys’ favourite snacks are Vegemite and avocado on toast and guacamole dip with vegetable batons.

Both of my boys really enjoy cooking with me in the kitchen, so helping them take the seed out of the avocado and chop the flesh into bite sized pieces, or mash the avocado helps build their anticipation of eating this wonderful fruit. Cheese and avocado melts are a lunchtime favourite, while adding avocado to mashed potato has proven successful at keeping their interest at dinner time.

These are just a few of my own experiences. I’d love to hear more about how other people get their kids to eat and stay healthy!

Hi. I planted a grafted Havocado tree about six months ago on our acreage and it is growing well. Recently I noticed that there was a white mold covering about 50% of the trunk and stems but not on the leaves. Would this be caused by all the wet weather we have add lately and I shouldn't worry too much about it or do I need to treat the tree with something?

My grafted avocado tree is now approx 2 years old. I need to know if I can transplant it as we now realize we planted it too close to the kids basketball hoop. This is cemented in the ground so much harder to relocate than the tree. Would it survive if we dug it up and transplanted it?

I had a "tropical avacado" in Florida recently--It was yellow inside, and tasted very sweet (similar to pineapple) Where can I buy them?
